Transforming Stories: How your story points to His Story!
“In the beginning…Faith!”
[An invitation to faith given on January 8, 2017 by Pastor Jerry Ingalls to the First Baptist Church in New Castle, Indiana, where we exist to see the transformation of stories through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.]
As we begin a new sermon series on our church’s call to transform stories through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we each must acknowledge that the Big Story of God, just like our stories that point to God, has a beginning point.
As I reflect upon my own story through the lens of God’s Big Story, the verses of Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 both come to mind: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) and “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
Both verses emphasize a beginning point of the Big Story! What is your beginning point? When did your story start to tell a bigger story? When do you remember seeing God first working in your life to transform your story so that it points to His Big Story?
For so many of us, the beginning point of the transformation of our story begins with faith. Faith is a BIG word—it is a word that allows us to see how God’s story impacts our story and then how our story told through the lens of His Big Story helps other people see God and His love for them. Faith is a Gospel word! In fact, Hebrews 11 (the Hall of Faith) teaches us that the beginning of the story is faith. Hebrews 11 is a gift from God to each of us to see how our stories are called to point to God’s Big Story! Each of the people included in this chapter is a real person, with real faith, in real history, whose story points to God. Their stories give us hope, strengthen our faith, and give us the courage to tell a better story with our story!
Our stories of faith can do the same for others!
Faith! What is faith? How does faith transform a story, your story, or at least become the beginning point of a transforming story?
Do you know your own story? Have you recorded it to pass on? Do you have confidence in what God has done for you, is doing in you, and will do through you because of the grace of faith He has given you?
I, we, invite you to start journaling about the beginning of your story. We are making “Transforming Stories” Journals available at FBC’s Resource Center each Sunday morning for you to start your journaling about your journey; free of charge for you because we believe your story has the power to point to God’s Big Story! Come by the church, join us for worship each Sunday at 10:30 am, and let’s journey together so that the manifest presence of God in our midst will transform our stories to point to Jesus Christ!
