PJ’s Daily Devotional for Friday, January 27, 2017.
Don’t go back to trusting in yourself; trust in God! I know how powerful it feels to live for yourself and to let your emotions be your energy source, but it truly is an empty unstable lifestyle that may be filled with busyness and activity, but to what end? Where are you going? What are you hoping for and fulfilling with your life?
Don’t be deceived by the counterfeit promises of your flesh that you can live the Christian life by the same humanistic power source and values that the world raises its children to live by (Paul calls these the “elementary principles of the world” (Galatians 4:3, 9). Rather, the Spirit calls you to live per your birth right as an adopted heir of the promise (you now have a new birthright of freedom from incessant indulgencies).
“In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So, you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God” (Galatians 4:3-7).
In Christ, you have been given so much more than the elementary principles of this world have to offer, but we struggle with this because we are bombarded with the overwhelming volume of these teachings and how they reverberate in our fleshly desires; whereas, the Spirit comes to us in a gentle whisper and calls from the inside out to live divergently per a different way as demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth.
Listen to the contrast:
- The world calls you to be a consumer for treasures, the Spirit calls you to be a container for the glorious treasure of Christ in you; you are saved to shine His marvelous light!
- The world calls you to hoard so that you can feel security in your possessions, the Spirit calls you to give generously of what you have so that you can find your security in the One who possesses you; you are not owned by your possessions!
- The world calls you to live a happy life by indulging your fleshly desires, the Spirit calls you to crucify your flesh and its desires so that you are not imprisoned by your fleshly desires; you are free in Christ!
- The world promises you what it cannot fulfill, the Spirit is the pledge of Heaven that you cannot lose; you are secure in Christ’s promises!
And on and on…. When we trust in ourselves and live by the “elementary principles of the world” we give ourselves repeatedly to counterfeit promises.
“Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?” (Galatians 4:8-9)
Do you know how bankers learn the difference between real currency and counterfeit?
They study the real thing. They don’t indulge in counterfeits; they study and handle the real currency so they can tell the difference; they are trained how to discern the marks of the real deal. Counterfeit currency is not worth the paper is printed on, just like the world’s counterfeit promises are not worth the time and energy you invest in seeking them.
Jesus’ admonition of “seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33) is a call to study the real thing; to live by and for the promises of God that are yours in Christ alone.
You have been adopted into freedom; to live like a child of God, not like a child of the world. You have the real thing so stop turning to the counterfeit. The counterfeit will get you nowhere quick, even if you get away with it for a while…it will catch up to you. At what cost, will you continue to live in a way that is counter to God’s will?
Be the real thing!
