PJ’s Daily Devotional for Thursday, March 30, 2017.

Today’s Bible Reading is Hebrews 8 found at https://www.esv.org/Hebrews+8/

It is nearly impossible for me to not simply geek out today, in fact, all throughout Hebrews. This book is so theologically rich, so deep and wide in its understanding, and so important in its implications! But since these are short morning devotions that flow out of my heart, let me just make a very short point from a long strand of thought: God is faithful to His covenants!

God relates to His people based on the covenant He has established with them: the new covenant instituted by grace through Jesus Christ is different than the old covenant instituted by grace through Moses, which is different than the covenant established by grace through Abraham. There is a lot more to God’s covenants and redemptive history than what I will try to capture in this short devotion, but, without equivocation, God remains faithful to all His covenants. God does not forget the promises He has made in the past (for a thousand years is but a day to the Lord), but relates to His people and the nations according to that which is current.

That, for example, is why it is imperative that people come into the grace of Jesus Christ through faith, while there is still time! Simply stated, this is where we are in redemptive history, under the new covenant sealed through the blood of Jesus Christ.

We serve the God of “covenant faithfulness.” The Hebrew word is ‘hesed’ and really there is no word for word translation for it: loving-kindness is the most common translation, but most literally it is covenant faithfulness. It is God’s character to keep God’s promises! This is an unchanging attribute of God.

God is faithful to His covenant; to His Name! That is why He is faithful to you; not because you deserve it, but because of His Name, His Glory, His reputation! The Cross is first and foremost about God fulfilling His own character, then it is about saving you! If God is not faithful to what He said He would be faithful to, then He is not the God of covenant faithfulness. So, rest in this truth, God’s covenant faithfulness is not dependent on your faithfulness, but on His alone.

In Christ alone! By faith so that no man should boast. The New Covenant is the fulfillment of God’s hesed.

So, do you still think that salvation is about your works, your goodness, your faithfulness? Who has deceived you to so misunderstand the mind and heart of God, and that which He has ordained from the foundations of the earth?

Throw yourself headlong into Jesus…He is the only way for you to be faithful because apart from Him you can’t do it. Be still, cease striving, and know that He is God.

All of God’s covenants are covenants of grace calling imperfect people to a perfect God.

Adam and Eve were not perfect…

Noah was not perfect…

Abraham and Sarah were not perfect…

Israel and his twelve sons were not perfect…

David was not perfect…

Not one person God has covenanted with has been perfect!

Only Jesus Christ is perfect and “the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises” (Hebrews 8:6).

I am not perfect…

You are not perfect…

Thank God for His grace available to imperfect people through faith in Jesus Christ!
