PJ’s Daily Devotional for Wednesday, April 19, 2017.
My wife has always thought I was a bit strange.
She’s right; I am. One of my favorite books of the Bible is Ecclesiastes and to this day, decades later, she doesn’t understand why. I try to explain that it effectively diagnosis me as a man “chasing after the wind.” You see, the Word of God tells me the truth about me. And the Word of God will tell you the truth about you. Over 20 years of Bible study and Christian discipleship, Jesus has changed me. The Word of God has not returned void in my life; I am a different person than I was and I am still being transformed day by day because there is a powerful Life in me: the imperishable seed of God!
First Peter 1:23-25 states, “Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.’ And this word is the good news that was preached to you.”
My flesh is like the grass that withers. My dreams upon this earth are like the flowers that fall. My flesh and my earthly dreams have their season, but that season will come to an end. As the Bible says, “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14). For whatever reason, unlike some who don’t have time for such thoughts in their young 20s, these truths hit me hard as a young military career officer. I was chasing after badges and tabs, seeking a successful military career, when the full weight of these truths caused me to be unable to stay on the path that I had set for myself in my teenage years. I couldn’t stay on plan when I realized I was but ornamental grass and my plans were but pretty flowers. They would have their season and then wither and fall. There had to be more…
Does that bother you or stir something within you?
Do you want more from this life? More than a season? More than a mist? Or do you feel a yearning that there is more?
Have you not experienced yet that all your restless, anxious toil is but a vanity of vanities, a chasing after the wind?
Is there not something deep within you that knows there must be something greater than what you know, a purpose beyond what can be seen or tasted or felt or experienced in this life?
The good news (gospel) of Jesus Christ holds the answer to this existential angst within you, because there is more to the story than you have been told. Maybe you’ve never had much time to think about it, you were too busy with your chasing after the wind, but as that season comes to an end, you can’t seem to get your mind off the questions of what this life is all about. You are confronted with your legacy; the value of your life; the questions of meaning and purpose.
There is so much more! Your withering grass and falling flowers can bring you great hope for what is coming and that will never be taken from you, rather than great remorse for what has already passed and can never come back. Your youth may be behind you, but your eternity is spread out before you. There is so much more…
For what are you yearning?
