PJ’s Daily Devotional for Thursday, April 20, 2017.

Today’s Bible Reading is First Peter 2 found at https://www.esv.org/1+Peter+2/

Listen to who you are in Christ: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy” (1 Peter 2:9-10).

I greatly value the teaching of who we are in Christ and the security we have in our new identity in Jesus Christ. These words excite me; do something within me: GOD GIVES US A NEW IDENTITY IN JESUS CHRIST!  This new identity is the promise of God personally given to us through faith in Jesus Christ. This new identity is a change of mind about who we are, why we live, and how we are to relate to other people. When God gives us newness, He purposes for us to be new all the way through. In the Bible, a new name is a new character with a new mission.

Our new identity in Christ is a gift of grace to live by grace for grace… We no longer represent ourselves, but the God of grace!

Listen to Second Corinthians 5:17-20 as God proclaims over us these truths: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

In Christ, God calls you His chosen race, His royal priesthood, His holy nation, His people for His own possession… We are His ambassadors and have been given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Do you hear the majesty and dignity of your new identity in Christ? The old has gone, behold the new has come!!!

Why? Why did God give this to us?

Because we are His rightful representatives on earth. We are the sign posts of heaven, the heralds of a new kingdom, the lights of the world all pointing to the One Pure Light—Jesus Christ—who is the way, the truth, and the life, and only through Him can anyone have access to Heaven (John 14:6).

Our Bible Reading says it this way, “that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).

Are you proclaiming the goodness and grace of God’s love to all who would put their trust in Jesus Christ? Are you witnessing to the marvelous light that called you out of darkness?  Are you walking in the newness and security of your identity in Christ Jesus?

Let us go to our families and into our communities to be messengers of God’s love and reconciliation. No one can take away from you who you are in Christ, but you must choose each day (each moment of each day) whom you are living for and representing as you go along the way of your daily life. Choose who God says you are; not who the world says you are!
