Have you ever felt like the forces of evil are aligned against you or against the Church?

Well, as much as that experience may have a momentary reality to you, I have some good news for you. Evil cannot stay aligned long! Why? Because the agents of evil do not have a lasting unity. Their alliance is temporary. Their agreement is volatile due to each party’s selfish ambition and vain conceit.

We see the final verse of Revelation 17:15-18, “And the angel said to me, ‘The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages. And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire, for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. And the woman that you saw is the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.’”

I state again that evil’s unity is ultimately doomed for chaos. Evil seeks to dominate and bully, but never leads with a unity marked by a submission to authority. Evil coerces and seduces, but never sacrificially unites for the sake of a cause greater than itself. Evil’s ambition is only for itself and its own agenda!

Not so with the people of God! The Church of Jesus Christ should not experience internally and organizationally this same chaos of evil. The people are called to be above-all servants of God who carry with them no personal agendas marked by selfish ambition or vain conceit. Regardless of function within the Body of Christ, every member finds him/herself in unison working to accomplish the commands of the One who is head, Jesus Christ. The Body of Christ is marked by submission to authority and sacrificial unity for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As we look more deeply in Revelation 17, we see God sovereignly ordering events in the midst of the chaos of evil; including the temporary alliance of evil. God is the one who put it into the evil agents “to carry out his purpose by being of one mind…until the words of God are fulfilled.” Apart from God’s ordering power, evil turns against itself and like many tributaries on a rushing river, defuses the power of what could be an even greater threat.

Even evil must ultimately submit to the ordering hand of the Sovereign God. Evil may have a temporary reign within established boundaries, but what great chaos it creates in the realm in which it has freedom to act.

Ultimately, under God’s sovereign hand, evil has the greatest of potentials to destroy and bring great chaos against the Church, and at times with God’s complete knowledge, within churches. But, ultimately, evil makes itself known as each agent overplays its own selfish and vain agenda.

May the Church of Jesus Christ be completely submitted to the One who is Head and show itself approved by this unwavering loyalty and sacrificial submission. This is the way good triumphs over all, by being under the One who calls us into relationship with Himself.

May those who have ears to hear, repent and be submitted to the Christ who is seated on the Mercy Seat of Heaven, who is coming again to gather His bride in purity and holiness and who will bring all things under His preeminence as the Kingdom of God finds completion in His perfect time.
