 “That You Would Be Known”

Message #6 on February 28, 2016

John 17:25-26

by Pastor Ken Durham

We have been hearing for the past 5 weeks from Pastor Jerry that God’s plan for your life is for you to:

Not for your own glory and recognition, but for God’s.

This past Sunday, we saw some amazing examples of this in the tv interviews following the Super Bowl win by the Philadelphia Eagles.  From the coach, to the quarterback to the receiver, they all began with “I want to first give praise to my God, my Lord and Savior for all He’s done for me.”

Even their offensive coordinator Frank Reich (who, by the way has been quoted in saying:  “I think it helps you be a better teammate. Our primary calling in life as a Christian is to bring out the best in other people. That’s the primary message of Christianity. We’ve been created to glorify God. How do we do that? He gives us gifts and abilities, and we’re supposed to bring those out in other people.”

Did you hear that?!?  To bring out the best in others to glorify God!!!

As we close out this series, we find Jesus talking very directly to God.  It almost seems like He is reminding God that “this was Your plan that You asked me to carry out, and here are the results. BUT, they are still going to need Your help to continue to get the message out to the rest of the world.” That’s why He began with “Righteous Father” (Fair, Just, Loving, Understanding)

John 17:25-26

“O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”

I.)      The world does not know you…            (John 1:10-11)

A) The word “know” in the greek is GINOSKO, which refers to the intimate sense of the word “know”.  This requires a true relationship.

~To know the heart, the deep desires.

B) That’s why Jesus said “…but I do”

~He knew the Father’s heart, because He has spent time with Him, both before the world began and during His time here among man.  (John 1:1-2; 1:18)

C) And the disciples know You sent me…

~They had spent time with Jesus, and knew His heart, and His heart was a reflection of the Father’s heart.

~Jesus was fulfilling the prophetic words of the O.T prophet, Jeremiah:  I will give them hearts that recognize me as the Lord.

They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me wholeheartedly.”    Jeremiah 24:7

          ~Know their hearts/strengths

II.)  I have revealed you to them (the disciples)

A) They have seen what You did through me.

~Spent three years with Him, heard teachings were witnesses to the miracles and healings.

~They will go on to see and do greater things           (John 1:50; John 14:12)

B) “Your love for Me will be in them…”

~the giving up of selfish wants and desires.            (John 15:12)

~not talking about just the physical act, but putting others ahead of ourselves             (Philippians 2:3)

C ) “And I will be in them.”

~He made this promise before he ascended             (Matthew 28:19-20)

~He had told them it would not be easy          (John 16:33)

That love is here today!  If you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you are a carrier.  If you have not, and you want to receive this free gift, it is here for you today.  And it doesn’t stop here…Jesus made a special request of His Father, so that ALL who believe in Him and call Him Lord will one day experience the fullness of the glory of God!

Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!
