The Call to the Great Community 2

Lesson #2:

The Church is One in Christ!

Our new sermon series, “The Call to the Great Community,” is a series of discipleship teachings about the body of Christ and our call to be fellow members of the body of Christ. This is an important call to answer for us individually and corporately for the sake of the mission of Jesus Christ (why He came!) for the glory of God. You have a purpose for belonging!

The big idea from the first teaching last week was that the church is God’s idea; not mine nor yours! From the Scriptures, we learned that the church is the Body of Christ because we exist for the mission of Jesus to the glory of God. The mission of Jesus is the great rescue mission; He came from Heaven to Earth to show us the way to the Father; this has always been God’s Plan A; therefore, the church exists for the mission – to make Jesus known and to continue His mission, as His body for the glory of God. We have a purpose for belonging!

Finally, last week you were invited to find unity with your fellow member by participating in the 150-day Pray the Psalms Discipleship Challenge. Today is Day #7, which means we are praying through Psalm 7. I pray you are finding it meaningful to do this just as you found it meaningful to read through the New Testament together. Belonging doesn’t happen by accident!

Today’s big idea: The Church is One in Christ!

There are three Scriptures we are going to walk through together so that we can anchor today’s big idea in God’s Word and work out its implications in our everyday discipleship: Truth + Application = Transformation!

Romans 12:4-5, “For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

+ How can we demonstrate our unity within our diverse functionality?

Ephesians 4:1-6, “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”

+ How should we treat one another to preserve the unity of the Spirit?

John 17:20-26, “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

+ How do we pray for one another to see the fulfillment of John 17 in us?

We are one in Christ! Keep praying through the Psalms so that we experience unity in prayer. There is so much more to learn.

The Call to the Great Community 1

Lesson #1:

The Church is God’s Idea!

+ INTRO: “The Call to the Great Community” is a series of messages about the body of Christ and our call to be fellow members of the body of Christ and why that is an important call to answer for us individually and corporately for the sake of the mission of Jesus Christ (why He came!) and the glory of God.

+ The Great Community is the “church” (ekklesia in Acts 11:26), which literally means, “the called out gathering or assembly.” While it can be used to describe any assembly of people, in the New Testament it is the work of the Holy Spirit to ingather those who have been called in Christ for God’s will.

+ BODY: The BIG IDEA for today is THE CHURCH IS GOD’S IDEA; NOT MINE OR YOURS!

+ Today’s reading from God’s Word comes from Ephesians 1:18-23, where Paul teaches,

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”

1) THE CHURCH is the BODY OF CHRIST!

+ The church is an intentional community of disciples who are called in love, gathered for love, and sent on the mission of love. We carry on the great rescue effort of Jesus Christ (Luke 19:10).

+ Read short story from LOMT, page 97.

+ As we just read, Ephesians 1:22-23. Let us continue to see how this idea is developed in Ephesians 4:11-16; Romans 12:4-8; and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.

2) BECAUSE THE CHURCH EXISTS FOR THE MISSION OF JESUS TO THE GLORY OF GOD

+ The Great Commission was given to the church before Jesus’ ascension in Matthew 28:18-20 and then empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill it at Pentecost in Acts 2.

+ We must remember WHY the CHURCH exists or we will get off mission and go in maintenance mode – We are called to the Rescue Mission of Jesus Christ (John 3:16-17)!

+ We are redeemed to fulfill the Genesis Commission (Genesis 1:26-27) as the heirs of the Abrahamic Promise (Genesis 12:1-3). To bless all things as Ephesians 1:19b-21 proclaims.

3) THIS IS GOD’S PLAN A!

+ Paul started our lesson in Ephesians 1:18-19a.

+ Let me remind you of the “so that’s” of Jesus’ prayer in John 17:22-23 (“By this all men will know that you are My disciples”) and His new commandment in John 13:34-35 (“so that the world may know that You sent Me”)? This is the ultimate purpose of all that we do as the church and as a local assembly of believers.

+ This is why we gather as the church – to remember and practice that this is God’s BIG IDEA! Read Hebrews 10:19-25.

CONCLUSION: We have so much to learn together over the course of this sermon series. We are going to pray Jesus’ prayer book together as we study, so I invite you to join me in the 150-Day Pray the Psalms Discipleship Challenge, which starts tomorrow with Psalm 1. Finish your NT and pray in unity.

Easter Sunday 2024

Live with Faith, Hope, and Love!

Matthew 28:1-10 & John 11:25-26 (NAS95)

Nobody expected Jesus to rise from the dead. Nobody.

Not the soldiers who were experts at the brutal art of crucifixion. Nobody survived.

Not the rulers who sentenced him to death. Nobody resisted their will.

Not the empire of Rome that dominated the world. Nobody in the capital even noticed.

Not the religious leaders. They were now rid of him once and for all.

Not His disciples. This was the end of their promising movement.

Not the crowds in Jerusalem. Their hopes of a conquering hero were crushed.

Not the principalities and powers, the evil forces in high places, the ministers of hate and cruelty, that conspired to kill the Son of God.

Only Jesus knew, because He trusted His Father to keep His promise, to fulfill His purpose, to manifest His mercy, to save a lost world.

It was for the joy of a resurrection coming that He endured the pain, carried our shame, forgave His enemies, and gave His life as a sacrifice for us.

Jesus the Messiah, the Christ of God, died and rose again so that anyone who puts their trust in him can be rescued from sin and sadness, delivered from death and judgment, reawakened by the shock of this good news, and infused with hope.

On that morning, NOBODY imagined an outcome like this. But then there was no body in the tomb.

Now EVERYBODY is invited to take the gift that fills our hearts, stills our fears, and transforms all of life with an undying, everlasting love.[1]

The Easter proclamation is God’s invitation into a personal relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ – it is God’s adoption of His Children at the great cost of His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for the forgiveness of our sins. It is through the promise of resurrection and life, as proclaimed by Jesus’ victory over death that we can have life with God, for this life and in the life to come. Listen to the Gospel of Matthew 28:1-10 and let us commemorate the historical event for which we celebrate Easter:

Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.” And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”

Let us pray.

Before Easter Sunday, Jesus promised in John 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” That is the question of the age – “Do you believe this?” It is a question that Jesus asks all people through the Holy Spirit, and I voice it to you personally today.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is our hope, not only for eternal life, but for today. It is important to realize this reality – there is more to the gospel of Jesus Christ than being saved from your sins so that you can enjoy eternity with God. While that is the best news ever proclaimed, the reality of the resurrection is that we are called to live with faith, hope, and love in this life, as ambassadors of Christ – we join with these first eyewitnesses of the resurrection to do exactly what they were told to do – “Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; … Don’t be afraid, go!”

This is the mission of the church of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20)! This is what we were saved to do. Jesus’ victory calls us to receive salvation, not only so we can be saved, but so that we can join with Jesus in His magnificent work. Paul taught us this amazing truth in 2 Corinthians 5:17-21:

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Let’s take a few minutes this morning to be reminded of the life we are called to live as the people who gather on Easter Sunday. As ambassadors of Christ, we no longer represent ourselves – we represent Jesus! There are three things I believe maturing ambassadors of Christ will exhibit in their daily lives if we are going to accurately exalt Jesus as crucified, risen, and coming again, through our lives. These three characteristics are found in 1 Corinthians 13:11-13:

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

First, maturing ambassadors of Jesus are messengers of faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is the entrance to the life of Christ, and it is impossible to accurately represent Him apart from God’s grace at work in your through faith in Jesus Christ. As Paul taught in Ephesians 2:1-10:

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

It is only through faith in Jesus Christ that we can please God, as Hebrews 11:6 teaches us, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Faith is what marks our lives because it is only through faith that we can be pleasing to the Lord or manifest the good fruit of the Holy Spirit in other people’s lives, showing them the very character of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Second, maturing ambassadors of Jesus are proclaimers of hope. Be different than the rest of the world – be a hope-bearer, not a doomsdayer! Anyone can focus on what is wrong – sin is like gravity! Just like when you step out of the second story window, when you hold a grudge or gossip about someone, you end up broken! Hope is a game-changer! I like to say that hope is my superpower because without hope in the God who keeps His promises, doing what God said He will do, I take matters into my own hands. This is the meaning of Romans 5:1-5:

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Apart from hope in God, I can’t demonstrate my faith! Hope gives us the courage to act according to our faith, and that is most clearly seen in our love, poured out to us in abundance!

Third, maturing ambassadors of Jesus are heralds of God’s love. John taught us this love in 1 John 4:7-19:

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.

The greatest test of your faith is often found in your daily relationships and how you conduct yourself under stress. How are you loving others? This is the greatest sign of your faith and hope; it’s how you persevere in love for the gospel message of love. Here’s a practical teaching on how to be an ambassador of Jesus, from Galatians 6:1-2, “Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.”

What is the law of Christ you ask? It’s love, as Jesus taught on the night He instituted the Lord’s Supper and washed the disciples’ feet, as an example of the kind of love we are to emulate. Jesus commanded in John 13:34-35, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

I return to the question that Jesus asked you, “Do you believe this?” Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and Savior of the world, who died on the cross for your sins, defeated death through His resurrection three days later, on the first Easter Sunday. Have you asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins and to fill that empty place with His Spirit, sealing you for the day of redemption. Do you believe this? If you do, are you living as an ambassador of God’s love?

That is the two-fold response I am calling you to today: 1) Believe in Jesus as the resurrection and the life! Pray to receive Christ as your personal Lord and Savior; and 2) Don’t be afraid, Go! Do what Christ has commanded you and live your life with faith, hope, and love, making the greatest of these, love, visible in your life, in word and deed.

Heart of a Child

Heart of a Child

Matthew 18:1-5

Over the past few weeks, we have been on a journey through the scriptures. And while today’s message is not part of Pastor Jerry’s series, we are still accountable to this 90 day challenge, so I need to ask these questions:

  • Are you currently up to 2 Corinthians 9? Y or N
  • Are you using the S.O.A.P technique? Y or N
  • Pray and meditate on the Lord’s prayer? Y or N
  • Did you memorize Matthew 11:28-30? Y or N
  • Did you work with Jesus (not for Him),do everything for His glory, and truly abide with Him? Y or N

Today’s scripture was one of those that “jumped out” at me during this current challenge. The disciples have been with Jesus now for over two years. They had heard His teachings, witnessed His miracles and had even seen thing happen in their own time of ministry. But this scripture points out just how ‘human’ the disciples were…and it can also be found in Mark 9:33-37 and Luke 9:46-48.

Turn to Matthew 18:1-5.

About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.  And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me.”

The other Gospel accounts say that the boys were “discussing” (Mark) or “arguing among themselves” (Luke). In their minds, they saw Jesus establishing His kingdom on earth while He was on earth. They saw Him gaining popularity with the people, so they were jockeying for position in this new Kingdom. Jesus used this example of a young child to set these boys straight.

I don’t know about you, but ‘adulting’ can be tough sometimes and I would love to be like a little child with no responsibilities. To be able to be carefree, play games and enjoy life. I remember playing with my boys when they were kids, and now being able to repeat that with my grandkids.

Playing games like “Peek-a-boo”    (tell ‘dad joke’ here)

Or “Hide-n-seek”, not the one where you tell them to go hide, and then ‘forget’ to go seek them…but where they are able to use their creative thought processes to find a spot to hide where you would least expect to find them.

Adam and Eve were the first ones to play Hide and Seek…not a good outcome. But God came up with a plan to seek and save that which was lost.

So for today, I would like for each of you to find the ‘inner child’ inside each and every one of us and become the child of God we are called to be. Let’s look at the scriptures on how we have our own version of ‘Hide and Seek’:

  1. Hide His Word (Psalm 119:11)
  2. Hide to seek (Matthew 6:6)
  3. Seek to find (Matthew 6:33)

1. Hide His Word

Psalm 119:11:  “I have hidden your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.”

Much like when you save money back in a safe place to be able to buy a big ticket item, the same is true when we mediate and memorize God’s Word.

But once they are discovered, we are not to keep them to ourselves. When we make them a part of our lives, it needs to be shared and be evident in everything that we do.

Psalm 78:4:    “We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.”

This echoes Deuteronomy 6:1-9; Deuteronomy 11:19 & Proverbs 23:13-14.

How will they know unless we tell them???

2. Hide to Seek

Matthew 6:6:  “But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

Find a place to get away from the distractions of this life.

Jesus did it, so you need to also!!! (Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16)

              Bible, paper and pen

Turn off the music, the phone, any distraction.

There is a time for the music/worship, but you also need the “BE STILL” time.

ILLUS:     Intentional Time:  Sabbatical: Katie Kinnaird

TBH….this is a difficult one for me.

Does not come naturally for me. I have to be intentional!

3. Seek to Find

Matthew 6:33:   “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

       Other translations…”Seek FIRST..”

The worlds says there is a proper order for things…. First things first!

*This idiom is used to tell someone that more important things should be done before less important things.

With God, we are told to keep Him first, seek Him and we are promised that we will find Him.

Matthew 7:7-8:  “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

This is in no way a one and done thing

We have to daily be working on this, especially for us slow learners!

The benefit of seeking and finding…

John 14:21:  “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

God never hides from us. He will hide us under His wings (Ps. 17:8),
He will hide us in the cleft of the rock (Ex 33:22)
and promises to draw near to us as we draw near to Him (James 4:8).
He has given us the free will to choose to seek Him, and that is what we have to do. (Ps. 119:2).

No matter how “old” we get, may we always have the heart of a child that is humble and full of faith.

+ Come to Me… (Same invitation as Mark 1:17)

+ “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?” (which makes sense when you realize Jesus was contrasting Himself with the Pharisees, as per Matthew 23:4-12)

+ “I will give you rest” (How does this promise connect to Mark 1:17? How does 1 John 5:3-4 inform your answer?)

+ Take My yoke upon and learn from Me (Discipleship!)

+ I am gentle and humble in heart (Spiritual Formation!)

+ Jesus quotes Jeremiah 6:16. Read it in its context, then check out the context of Jesus’ gracious promise in Matthew 11:20-24.)

+ My yoke is “easy” = custom-made / well-suited (your personal relationship with Jesus) Read Acts 15:10-11.

+ My burden is light. Read Galatians 5:1 & 13, which leads us into last week’s training on walking by the Spirit.

Do all things for God’s glory! Read Colossians 3:23-24.

+ Whatever you do… (Does that exclude any activities?)

+ with your whole living being (soul) = Wholeheartedly!

+ as for the Lord, not for men (Read Galatians 1:10. How does this free you up from people pleasing tendencies?)

+ What reward are you hoping to receive from Jesus? Think about 2 Timothy 2:4 and Matthew 25:21.

Jesus’ teaching on the vine and the branches brings it all together – you need a trellis if you are going to bear fruit in the Kingdom of God! Read John 15:1-8.

Teaching #5: “The Call to the Great Community!”

(If you are just beginning your journey, please click HERE to read the introduction

Loving accountability from the first 3 weeks:

1) Bible intake of Matthew 1 to John 12: Y or N [Note: if this pace of Bible intake is too much for you, please know that

grace abounds! Don’t quit; keep going! Find a pace that works for you.]

2) Use the S.O.A.P. Bible journaling technique: Y or N
3) Pray the Lord’s Prayer every day: Y or N
4) Memorize John 13:34-35: Y or N

5) Calendar a weekly time for spiritual friendship: Y or N

+ Disciple = intentionally following Jesus’ way and teachings

+ Discipleship = intentional journey and life-long commitment to learn and manifest the fruit of who I am in Christ

+ The “Big Three” = transformative practices of Bible intake, prayer intimacy, and spiritual friendships

+ Great Community = intentional community of disciples who are called in love, gathered for love, and sent on mission

1) The Great Community is the “church” (ekklesia in Acts 11:26), which literally means, “the called out gathering or assembly.” While it can be used to describe any assembly of people, in the New Testament it is the work of the Holy Spirit to ingather those who have been called in Christ for God’s will. The church is God’s idea; not mine or yours!

2) Read 1 Peter 2:4-12.  Why is God calling us out of the world and into fellowship with Him and one another?

3) Memorize Matthew 5:14. What is the difference between being a “city on a hill” vs. a farmhouse on a hill?

+ Meditate upon this truth within the context of Matthew 5:13-16. How is Jesus calling us to be His church?

4) Read Acts 2:38-47.  What brings the church together?  What were some of the activities of the early church?

5) We are the church!  Jesus is the head, and we are the many members of His one body. This imagery gives the body structure and purpose. Read Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:11-16; Romans 12:4-8; and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.

6) We are commanded to gather as the church. Read Hebrews 10:23-25. Why are we supposed to gather today? What difference does it make to gather regularly?

7) The kingdom of God is a relational kingdom! As fellow members of the church our relationships have significance. What is the “so that” of Jesus’ prayer in John 17:22-23 and how does that connect to the new command of John 13:34-35? What then is the ultimate purpose of all that we do as the church and as a local assembly of believers?

+ “so that the world may know that You sent Me, …”

+ “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, …”

Action Items for this week:

1) Bible intake for this week: John 13-21 & Acts 1-12.

2) Write a SOAP journal entry for either each chapter or each day. Bring your notebook. Are you willing to share?

3) Review this handout as you prepare to read your Bible every day. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you “become” conformed to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29).

4) Memorize Matthew 5:14 and be intentional about gathering with your local assembly of believers (church).

Teaching #4: “The Third of the Big Three:

The Importance of Spiritual Friendship!”

(If you are just beginning your journey, please click HERE to read the introduction

Loving accountability from the first 3 weeks:

1) Bible intake of Matthew 1 to Luke 17: Y or N
[Note: if this pace of Bible intake is too much for you, please know that grace abounds! Don’t quit; keep going! Find a pace that works for you.]
2) Use the S.O.A.P. Bible journaling technique: Y or N
3) Pray every day and during Bible time: Y or N
4) Read and reflect on the Tyranny of the Urgent: Y or N
5) Memorize 1 Thessalonians 5:17 & Lord’s Prayer: Y or N

This is about who you are in Christ! A disciple is a person who intentionally follows the ways and teachings of Jesus.
Discipleship is the intentional journey to Christlikeness; it’s a life-long commitment to learn and manifest who you are as a disciple through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
The third of the “Big Three” is spiritual friendship! The first is Bible intake and the second is prayer intimacy. This is the cord of three strands of your discipleship – “A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart” (Ecclesiastes 4:12). This is the way you experience spiritual vitality in the custom-made yoke of Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30).

Jesus sets the example of having spiritual friends!

1) Let’s start by reading Luke 22:39-46:
+ “as was His custom” (39)
+ How did Judas know where to find Jesus? (Luke 22:47)
+ “And He took with Him…” (Matthew 26:37) This event was Jesus’ point of greatest need for spiritual friends.
What kind of friend are you being? What are your next steps?

2) Reflect on the implications of Jesus’ example of spiritual friendship in the foot washing of John 13:5-20.
+ Memorize Jesus’ new command in John 13:34-35:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
+ How do Mark 2:2-5 & Galatians 6:1-2 teach us about how to fulfill the law of Christ as a spiritual friend?

3) Internalize (head to heart) Jesus’ prayer in John 17:20-23:
+ “they may be one, just as We are one” (22)
+ “that they may be perfected in unity, so that…” (23)

4) As you think about Jesus’ intentionality with His disciples, meditate on John 15:14 & Matthew 12:50:
+ “You are My friends if _________________________.”
+ “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

5) Read 1 Corinthians 16:17-18. Spiritual friendships refresh you and help you keep a right perspective on life.

Action Items for this week:

1) Bible intake for this week: Luke 18-24 & John 1-12.
4) Memorize John 13:34-35 and be intentional by setting up a weekly time to invest in your spiritual friendships.
