Seize the Moment – Day 445

Today’s hymn focus will be “At the Cross”

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NLT)

“The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction!

But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.”

These poetic verses were written by Isaac Watts, born in 1674 to Pastor Isaac & Sarah Watts. His father was considered a dissenter because he did not fall in line with the teachings of England’s Anglican Church. The younger Isaac showed exceptional intellectual abilities, learning Latin, Greek, French and Hebrew by the age of 13. At the age of 19, he joined his father in leading the Above Bar Congregational Church in Southampton, where he began writing hymns for the church to sing. He published this song in 1707 in a book entitled Hymns and Spiritual Songs.

Almost 150 years later, while singing this song in a revival service, Fanny Crosby (our blind hymnist from last week’s song) was converted to Christ. She said “my very soul was flooded with a celestial light.” So Isaac Watts played a part in her salvation.

At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light, and the burden of my

heart rolled away. It was there by faith, I received my sight, and now I am

          happy all the day!

We need to wake up and realize that the power of written words and a beautiful melody do not just impact a few, but can continue to echo through the ages, affecting people’s lives for generations to come. Sing and proclaim this joyous song today!

At the Cross

(Alas and Did My Savior Bleed?)

1
Alas, and did my Savior bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Chorus:
At the cross, at the cross where
I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

2
Was it for sins that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

3
Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut His glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker, died
For man, His creature’s sin.

4
Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears.
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt mine eyes to tears.

5
But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away,
’Tis all that I can do.
