Today’s hymn focus will be “I’ll Fly Away”

“Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.”
Christian songwriter, Albert E. Brumley, actually composed “I’ll Fly Away” in 1929 as he was working on the family farm and picking cotton. To its very core, this song IS gospel music. These Christian-influenced lyrics rely heavily on the image of departing life, which is full of suffering, and joining God in the afterlife.
The words brim with joy, turning the stereotypical fear and sorrow of death completely on its head. Like many traditional spirituals, this song is intended to be sung by anyone and everyone. Providing “theological escapism”—escaping the toils of earth for the joy of heaven, it brings joy and hope to the heart of those singing it.
