Hymn:  I Know Whom I Have Believed

Seize the Moment – Day 361

Today’s Hymn Focus:  I Know Whom I Have Believed

“ For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.” (NASB95)

At the age of 21, Daniel Webster Whittle joined the 72nd Illinois Infantry Company B as a 2nd lieutenant, later becoming provost marshal on the staff of Gen. O.O. Howard. During the Civil War, he was with Gen. Sherman on his march to the sea and was wounded and captured at the battle of Vicksburg, MI.

During his captivity, he began reading a small New Testament that his mother had packed in his haversack. God used him to bring peace to a young soldier that was dying, even though he was not yet a believer. He heard God say, “You know the way to salvation. Get right down on your knees, accept Christ and pray for this boy!” When he opened his eyes from the prayer, the young man had passed, but there was a look of peace on his face.

Years later in 1883, he penned the words to this hymn as an expression of his testimony of faith in Jesus Christ. Raise your voice as we sing:

But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day!

We need to wake up every day declaring our faith in the One who has saved us. This is not a message that we can keep to ourselves, but need to share it loud and proud! We know Jesus, and He is the Way, the Truth and the Light!

I Know Whom I Have Believed

1.
I know not why God’s wondrous grace
to me he hath made known,
nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
redeemed me for his own.

Refrain:
But I know whom I have believed,
and am persuaded that he is able
to keep that which I’ve committed
unto him against that day.

2.
I know not how this saving faith
to me he did impart,
nor how believing in his word
wrought peace within my heart.

(Refrain)

3.
I know not how the Spirit moves,
convincing us of sin,
revealing Jesus through the word,
creating faith in him.

(Refrain)

4.
I know not when my Lord may come,
at night or noonday fair,
nor if I walk the vale with him,
or meet him in the air.

(Refrain)
