Seize the Moment – Day 1019

Today’s hymn focus will be

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

John 10:2-3  (NASB95)

But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep.  To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”

This hymn was written in 1836 and attributed to Dorothy A.Thrupp. Born in London, she grew up a very modest person, but loved writing stories and songs for children’s magazines. It was put to music by William Bradbury and has appeared in over 1000 hymnals.

But there is a story tied to this song is of Ira Sankey, the famous song leader for D.L. Moody. One Christmas Eve in 1876 while riding a steamboat, he was asked to sing. He sang this hymn, and the song touched a rough looking character who stepped forward and asked how he could find that shepherd. God had brought it around full circle, because this same man had heard Ira sing this song back in 1862 when Ira was a Union Soldier, and the rough character was a Confederate soldier hiding in the woods.

            Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care

            In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare

As we begin a new year, we need to wake up and ask the Savior to lead us each and every day, because we never know whose life we might be able to touch and change for eternity.

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

1
Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

2
We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray.

3
Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Early let us turn to Thee;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Early let us turn to Thee.

4
Early let us seek Thy favor,
Early let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
With Thy love our bosoms fill:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still.
