Seize the Moment – Day 1051

By the Skin of your Teeth!

Job 19

Good morning! This is Pastor Jerry Ingalls from New Castle First Baptist Church and today is Wednesday, February 1.

Have you ever made it through a situation by the skin of your teeth? This is an idiom we use to express a narrow miss, to describe something that almost didn’t happen. For example, the security line at the airport took forever and I made it to my airplane by the skin of me teeth.

Job described his situation in Job 19:20,

“My bone clings to my skin and my flesh, and I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.”

While there was great anguish in his words, there was also a glimmer of hope that sets you up for verses 25-26,

“As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will take His stand on the earth. Even after my skin is destroyed, yet from my flesh I shall see God.”

“My Redeemer lives” is a powerful faith statement about the God who redeemed Israel from Egypt (Exodus 6:6; 1 Chronicles 17:21) and His people from exile (Isaiah 41:14; Nehemiah 1:10). Though God’s people suffered for a time, God certainly rescued and delivered them from their captivity. Job’s proclamation pointed to the hope that has been revealed to us through the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ, as promised to us in John 11:25-26,

“I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Job believed before there was evidence for such a faith! You may feel like you are not going to get out of this life alive, but with faith the size of a mustard seed (Luke 17:6), you will be saved (Romans 10:13; Acts 2:21; 4:12). Even if only by the skin of your teeth!

Seize the moment and find hope for today in Jesus Christ, the Redeemer who lives – He has risen! We will rise with Him (Romans 6:5)!

God bless you!
