Seize the Moment – Day 505

The Importance of Rest!

Exodus 31

Good morning! This is Pastor Jerry Ingalls from New Castle First Baptist Church and today is Wednesday, August 4.

When you hear the word sabbath, what comes to your mind?

Listen to how God describes the importance of sabbath rest in His covenant code with Israel in Exodus 31:15-17:

For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death. So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed.

The word sabbath simply means to stop. In Genesis 2, God’s stopping on the seventh day of creation was the first thing in all His creative efforts that He declared holy; it was a time, not a thing or a place!

In Hebrews 4:9-11, we see the importance of the sabbath reiterated to new covenant believers:

“So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.”

Taking a day of rest has always been an important rhythm of God’s creation. Our culture and the western church ignore this rhythm at great cost to our well-being: spiritually, physically, mentally, and relationally! Sabbath is not a work of salvation, but a gift for the saved. Delight in God’s grace and find rest for your soul (Matthew 11:28-30).

Seize the moment by taking out your personal calendar to prioritize one full day of sabbath each week to experience the rest of God.

God bless your day!
