Seize the Moment – Day 690

Today’s hymn focus will be

“In the Sweet By and By”

Hebrews 13:14(ESV)

“For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

Written by Samuel Fillmore Bennett and composed by Joseph P. Webster, this hymn came out of a casual conversation between the two friends. Like a lot of creative people, Webster struggled with bouts of depression. Being a caring friend, Bennett learned to watch for the signs of his struggle. One day, Webster came into his office looking down, and when he asked how he was doing, he responded, “I’ll be all right by and by.” Bennett quickly responded, “In the sweet by and by…that would make a good hymn.” Right then and there they began to write the verses and chorus. Webster started humming a melody and brought in a friend with his violin to give us the song we have today.

In the sweet by and by, we shall meet on that beautiful shore

In the sweet by and by, we shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We need to wake up and realize that our focus needs to be upon Jesus and His promises. The cares of this life only weigh us down and cause us to be distracted. That is why we need to cast all our cares at the feet of Jesus and press on towards the promises He has given us.

In the Sweet By and By

There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain:
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.
